Stage one and two of Boulcott Hospital’s building plans are now complete. The new Specialist Centre accommodates consultants in the areas of Orthopaedics, Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery, Gynaecology/Obstetrics, ENT, Head and Neck Surgery, General Surgery, Rheumatology and Gastroenterology. The Specialist Centre also caters for visiting specialists in the areas of Urology, Ophthalmology, Paediatric Surgery, Vascular Surgery and Cardiology.
Pacific Radiology and Boulcott Breastcare are housed in the ground floor facilities. This enables patients to be referred by their GP’s for x-rays, mammograms, ultrasounds, CT’s and MRI scans with the ability to go upstairs to the Specialist Centre if required, and then, if necessary, surgery and recovery all under one roof.
Included in this part of the project was also a major restructuring of theatre sterile areas and day recovery rooms within the Peri-operative suite. Furthermore there was the addition of around 450 square metres of ward space, sterile and general storage, office space and nursing stations.
Some of the land between the existing hospital and the new building has become a beautifully landscaped courtyard which has retained natural light and a view to some of the private rooms.
Building developments have included a third operating theatre, eight extra inpatient beds, a new nine bed day stay unit and a revamped and extended kitchen. There is also an addition of a seminar room, and the upgrade of the current staff room.
The hospital now handles all specialties except Cardiac and Neuro Surgery. Further, it conducts Urological and Ophthalmological procedures not undertaken at Hutt Hospital.
The number of procedures carried out is currently between 4000 and 4500 a year. Further developments are planned for the future that will ultimately result in the hospital having five theatres and 50 inpatient beds.
