Stephen completed his medical degree in Otago in 1995. Following this, he worked in Gisborne and Wellington before travelling the world, working as a locum GP and junior doctor in New Zealand and the UK along the way. He completed his post-graduate training in Wellington before going back to the UK to undertake research and inflammatory bowel disease fellowships at Cambridge and University College London.

He returned to New Zealand in 2008, and works as a Gastroenterologist at Hutt and Boulcott Hospitals. His research interest is the dietary management of inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome, and he has clinical interests in inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome and interventional endoscopy.
