Craig MacKinnon graduated in 1989 from Otago University and was subsequently admitted to advanced training in Plastic and Reconstructive surgery after spending time in basic surgical training in Wellington, Hamilton, and London, UK. He completed advanced specialist training in Hamilton and Wellington, gaining the FRACS in 1999. At this time he was under the tutelage of the late Max Lovie, specifically in regards to the ongoing care of the cleft lip and palate patients in the region. He was accepted as a Fellow at the Australian Craniofacial Unit in 2000, in Adelaide, under the renowned craniofacial surgeon David David. Wide experience was gained in the field of craniofacial and cleft surgery. This was followed by a period working in private practice in Adelaide, gaining widespread laser surgery experience. Following this, he underwent an aethestic surgery fellowship at The Wellington Hospital, London, UK, working alongside leading British aesthetic plastic surgeons.
A short stint in Hamburg at the largest European maxillofacial Clinic followed this, and then an appointment at The Queen Mary Hospital Department of Head and Neck Surgery, Hong Kong, as Honorary Clinical Associate to the University of Hong Kong, under Professor William Wei.
Following this Head and Neck Surgery Fellowship, time was spent at the Chang Gungh Craniofacial Centre in Taipei, Taiwan, under the guidance of Professor Yu -Ray Chen, a world renowned Craniomaxillofacial and cleft surgeon.
On return to New Zealand, an appointment was taken up as a consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon at the Regional Plastic, Reconstructive and Burns Unit at Hutt Hospital. Main areas of interest include cleft lip and palate surgery, craniomaxillofacial and head and neck surgery, aesthetic surgery and breast reduction, breast lift and breast augmentation. Skin tumour surgery and hand surgery also occupy a large proportion of his practice.
